In this year’s issue of Torch magazine, we explore the concept of excellence as a collective endeavour — an idea at the heart of Havergal’s Empowering Excellence strategic plan.
Havergal is focused on fostering connection, belonging and wellbeing within our community. By celebrating one another’s achievements, our students develop confidence and motivation, knowing they are surrounded by peers who champion their successes. This spirit of encouragement is woven into daily life at Havergal, whether it’s fans wearing green and gold at athletic events; students rallying behind peer-led initiatives; Old Girls/Alums nominating one another for awards and accolades; or teachers, past and present, continuing to show up for students and Old Girls/Alums. These strong connections, built on a foundation of mutual support, create a community that values collaboration over competition.
This issue highlights inspiring stories of excellence in action:
“Defining Excellence“ is a message from Principal Dr. Katrina Samson that explores how Havergal embraces excellence as a journey, not a destination. She reflects on the power of a blank page and emphasizes that excellence is not about perfection, but about collaboration, resilience and boldly striving toward a life of purpose.
“Building Confidence and Community“ features School Captain Carol Rong, who recalls the warm welcome she received upon joining Havergal in Grade 9. Despite setbacks — such as not being elected to House Council on her first attempt — she found encouragement in the community’s unwavering support, fuelling her confidence and self-assurance today as Havergal’s top student leader.
“Setting the Foundation for Success Through Havergal’s Early Literacy Program“ examines how teamwork among primary teachers and Learning Support staff ensures every student thrives in literacy — a cornerstone of all learning.
“Empowering Excellence Through Connection and Belonging“ explores Havergal’s holistic approach to wellbeing, emphasizing the power of personal values, emotional awareness, self-compassion and the mind-body-spirit connection in building resilience for the future.
“The Heart of Havergal’s Volunteer Spirit“ showcases four Old Girls/Alums who remain deeply connected to the school as dedicated volunteers and champions. Their ongoing involvement speaks to the lasting impact of their Havergal experience, as they cherish the friendships, memories and sense of community that continue to enrich their lives.
